 Heddon Street, London, UK

The No 1 Heddon Street project comprises the conversion of a Grade II listed theatre building and part of Gleeds former offices into a new flagship store for Habitat.

The project was part of The Crown Estate redevelopment of Regent Street and was headed by main contractor John Sisk. Works involved installing new raised floors and opening up the structure around the Regent Street entrance to provide regular floor plates.

Brogan Group provided the access for the project and works included erecting a scaffold gantry to Heddon Street across the pavement which supported a large goods hoist. Independent scaffolding was also erected to ther rear elevation which cantilevered out above the existing flat roofs.

Further to this a large temporary roof was erected across the entire area and a heavy duty unit beam cantilevered scaffold was erected above Regents Street from the top floor for roof works.

Internal works consisted of erecting blockwork scaffolds, loading bays, lift shaft scaffolds, leading edge handrails and internal birdcage scaffolds for ceiling works.

Although the building was upgraded to include new life safety systems and prepared for the retail fit out, original listed features of the theatre were preserved and enhanced.  A key example of this is the original theatre organ which was fully restored to full working condition and is now on display in the new Habitat store.
