Wembley Arena reopens after a spectacular £35M refurbishment

The redevelopment of Wembley Arena by John Sisk & Son has totally transformed the venue, and successfully achieved the combination of both restoring this great architectural piece to its former glory, yet creating a spectacular 21st century icon.

The seating capacity was increased to over 12,000 and standing up to 5,000. The most fundamental design change has been the 180o re-orientation and main entrance, which now opens onto a stunning £10m new public square. The entrance itself is now adorned in a new art deco-style façade, which echoes the design of the building when it opened in 1934, as the Empire Pool.

The original building is Grade II listed has a strong symmetry around a central axis which has been maintained by a set of two feature staircases in the foyer which mirror each other, their concrete and steel construction adding to the dramatic effect. Remaining sympathetic and true to the original 1930's Owen Williams concrete structure has revealed and enhanced the building's original beauty and simplicity of design.

Our remit for this project consisted of erecting independent scaffold to the perimeter of the building up to roof level.  Internal works included the erection of lift shaft scaffolds, blockwork scaffolds, leading edge handrails and birdcage scaffolds to the new stage area.
